I used to absolutely despise whisky.

During my early years in the corporate world, whisky was never about "flavor" or "aroma." It was a tool for business—a mandatory part of high-pressure networking. Whenever I was forced to drink it, I would tilt a shot glass back and gulp it down as fast as possible, only to endure that sharp, stinging burn in my throat. To me, whisky was just an expensive way to suffer.

But then, life took an unexpected turn. I started dating someone who lived in a completely different world—someone with immense wealth and a very refined, singular taste. She told me from the start: "I only drink whisky. No beer, no cocktails, just whisky."

Our first night out, she ordered a bottle of Balvenie 12 Year DoubleWood.

Honestly? I was unimpressed. Behind my polite smile, I was thinking to myself, "Only 12 years? That’s it?" Having only known whisky as a harsh, high-proof liquid, I assumed age was the only indicator of quality. I looked at that bottle with pure skepticism, prepared for another night of "throat burn."
