The Accidental Golfer
A Random Turn into the Fairway: How It All Began
▲ A spontaneous detour: How a casual hour changed my sporting paradigm completely
My journey into golf didn't start with a formal coach or a deep family tradition. It started quite unexpectedly with a business trip. As a fresh graduate stepping into a technical engineering role, I spent my early career days traveling constantly with a senior sales colleague. We were a classic corporate team: the analytical engineer and the charismatic salesman.
• The Catalyst: A senior sales teammate suggested a spontaneous visit to a roadside driving range visible from the highway.
• The First Swing: Gripped an iron for the first time without any prior planning, proving that enduring hobbies often spark from casual, unscripted moments.
An Hour to Spare
During one of our intensive client trips, we happened to wrap up our scheduled technical tasks much earlier than anticipated. Finding ourselves with an hour of free time before heading back, and noticing a small, humble driving range operating right alongside the highway, my colleague turned to me and asked, "Tony, have you ever tried golf?"
Holding the Iron
At that moment, my answer was a firm and immediate no. But just minutes later, I found myself standing awkwardly on a green driving mat, gripping a standard iron for the very first time in my life.
It was clumsy, completely unplanned, and entirely unexpected. Was this my official, dignified introduction to the sport? Perhaps not in the traditional sense. But more than anything, it stands as a clear reminder that sometimes, the most enduring and profound passions in our lives start with a simple, spontaneous detour.
