Golf as a Pure Hobby: Finding Peace Beyond the Scorecard

The Pandemic Reset: From the Fairway to the Keyboard

When the pandemic hit, the company I had dedicated years to suddenly shut its doors. With the entire job market frozen, finding a new position in my previous field felt next to impossible. It was a period of forced reflection. Instead of waiting for things to change, I decided to adapt—I picked up my laptop and started studying programming from scratch once again.

During those intense days of coding, debugging, and shifting my career path, golf was completely out of the picture. My clubs stayed in the closet, and my mind was focused entirely on building a new professional foundation.

The Return: Embracing the Freedom of Casual Play

As the pandemic finally faded into history, life began to open up again. I found myself occasionally returning to the golf course. But this time, something fundamental had shifted within me. The long hiatus and the career transition had completely washed away my past obsessions.

I no longer have any lingering attachment to the scorecard. Some days, I swing smoothly and card a comfortable score in the mid-80s. Other days, my mechanics wander, and I happily play like a true 100-stroke golfer. And you know what? It doesn't matter at all. The constant pressure is gone.

The Golden Rule: Zero Betting

If there is one absolute rule I maintain now, it is this: I never, under any circumstances, participate in betting games on the course. The stressful days of 2012—where corporate pressure forced me into a high-stakes game and I lost a significant amount of money—are buried in the past. Today, my golf rounds are strictly a peaceful escape. Golf is a hobby, not a high-stress card table.

💡 Insight: What is the best way to enjoy golf as a true hobby?

To enjoy golf as a pure hobby, you must remove internal and external stressors. This means accepting score fluctuations without frustration and strictly avoiding on-course betting, allowing the sport to serve as a mindful relaxation tool rather than a performance-driven metrics trap.

A Global Lifestyle: Whisky, Travel, and Fairways

Lately, my golfing journey has evolved into something truly magnificent. It has merged with my love for travel and fine spirits. Instead of rushing to local driving ranges, I now travel across different countries. I explore unique international courses, breathe in new landscapes, and spend my off-hours hunting down rare bottles of local whisky.

Combining a relaxed round of golf with the discovery of an exquisite single malt in a foreign city brings a level of happiness that my younger, score-obsessed self could never have understood. Golf is finally doing what it was always meant to do: bringing pure, unadulterated joy to my life.
